UNIT 2: CellsStem Cell Research — Potential Solutions, Practical Challenges
A group of embryonic stem cells. (colored SEM magnification 1000x)
A news program asks viewers to vote online: "Should stem cell research be banned? Yes or no?" Some people claim that stem cell therapy will revolutionize medicine. Others believe that some types of stem cell research violate ethical standards and are not justified by the potential benefits. Between these two positions exists a wide range of ideas about what is or is not acceptable. Would you know how to vote?
Using Stem Cells
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can regenerate themselves and develop into specialized types of cells. Stem cell research offers the hope of understanding basic cell processes and treating or even curing many dreaded diseases. However, a lot of technical challenges must be overcome before stem cell therapy is a realistic option, and ethical issues continue to surround stem cell research.
Potential Benefits
Stem cell research offers many potential benefits.
- Studying adult stem cells may help scientists better understand how tissues develop and what goes wrong when those tissues become diseased.
- A better understanding of the properties of stem cells may give scientists more information about how cancer cells replace themselves and thus helps scientists develop more targeted cancer therapies.
- Stem cells could be used to grow human tissues to test the effects of drugs and chemicals.
- Stem cells may be used to replace healthy cells that are killed by radiation treatment for cancer.
- Stem cells may be used to replace tissues. For example, chemotherapy kills blood-producing cells in bone marrow. Many chemotherapy patients have marrow taken before treatment that is later reinjected into the patient after treatment. However, the marrow could have cancer cells. The use of blood-producing stem cells in place of bone marrow transplants would remove this danger.
Technical Challenges
This researcher is micro-injecting mouse stem cells into fertilized mouse eggs to be used in drug research.
Adult stem cells have been used therapeutically for years in the form of bone marrow transplants. Nevertheless, many technical challenges must still be overcome before stem cells can be used to treat a wide range of disorders. Examples are highlighted below.
Supply: Stem cells can be taken from a variety of sources, including an embryo, a patient, a patient’s relative, or an established stem cell line. Each source presents unique challenges. Established cell lines may seem like the obvious choice, but some scientists are concerned that these cells have built up a lot of mutations as they have undergone thousands of divisions.
Transplantation into the target area: The delivery of stem cells to targeted tissues can be complex, especially if the tissues are deep inside the body. And once delivered, stem cells must “learn” to work with other cells. For instance, inserted cardiac cells must beat in unison with a patient’s heart cells to be effective.
Prevention of rejection: Stem cells may be rejected if a patient’s body sees them as foreign. This problem can remain even when certain identifying proteins are removed from the cells’ membranes. The development of SCNT technology in humans could help solve this problem so that patients would not have to take drugs to suppress their immune system.
Suppression of tumor formation: By their very nature, stem cells remain undifferentiated and continue to divide for long periods of time. When transplanted into an organism, many embryonic stem cells tend to form tumors. This risk must be removed before they can be used therapeutically.
Unanswered Questions
Stem cell research and therapy do not only involve questions of what we can do. They also involve questions about what we should do, who should benefit, and who should pay.
- Should human embryos be a source of stem cells?
- How can scientists protect their work when patent laws vary from country to country?
- How should stem cell research be funded?
- How can the benefits of stem cell research best be shared by all people, regardless of income?
- Should insurance cover costly stem cell procedures?
Setting Guidelines for Research
Who should control stem cell research? In 2001, ethical concerns prompted the U.S. government to set strict limits on the use of federal funds for embryonic stem cell research. However, privately funded research continues. In 2005, the National Academy of Sciences issued voluntary guidelines for human embryonic stem cell research that included the following:
- Embryo donors must give informed consent and not receive any payment.
- Stem cells for research can be harvested from embryos only during the first 14 days of development.
- Each institution conducting stem cell research should establish its own oversight committee.

Technology
Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer
Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), also called therapeutic cloning, is a method for obtaining stem cells that has been used to clone animals. The process is still under development, however, and it has not yet been used to produce human stem cells. SCNT offers the hope of using a patient’s own DNA to produce stem cells that can form many types of specialized cells. The use of stem cells that are genetically identical to a patient would decrease that person’s risk of cell rejection and the need for drugs to suppress the immune system. Many SCNT studies have been done in mice; the diagram to the right shows how the SCNT process might be applied in human cells.
- An unfertilized egg is taken from a female’s body, and the nucleus—containing the DNA—is removed. A cell is then taken from a patient’s body. The nucleus is removed and inserted into the egg.
- The egg is given a mild electrical stimulation, which makes it divide. The DNA comes from the patient’s nucleus, and the materials needed for division come from the egg.
- The stem cells could then be cultured and caused to differentiate into any tissue or organ needed by the patient.
Once a stem cell line is established, in theory it can continue to grow indefinitely. Researchers could use these cell lines without having to harvest more stem cells. The cell lines also could be frozen and shipped to other researchers around the world.
Careers
Cell Biologist in Action
Dr. Gail Martin
Title: Professor, Anatomy, University of California, San Francisco
Education: Ph. D., Molecular Biology, University of California, Berkeley
In 1974 Dr. Gail Martin was working at the University College in London when she made a huge advance. She developed a way to grow stem cells in a petri dish. These fragile cells were hard to work with, so Dr. Martin’s breakthrough removed a big obstacle to stem cell research. Seven years later, she made another key discovery while working in her own laboratory at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) in her native United States—how to harvest stem cells from mouse embryos. Her work has helped other scientists develop ways to harvest stem cells from human embryos and explore their use in treating disorders.
Dr. Martin likes to point out that her work shows how small advances in basic biology can pay off years later in unexpected ways. She states that many people focus on cures for specific diseases, not realizing that these cures "may come from basic research in seemingly unrelated areas. What is really going to be important 20 years from now isn’t clear."

My vote on Stem Cell Research cannot be placed as a whole, since my opinions on the two major types (Embryonic and Adult) are completely polar.
I fully support Adult Stem Cell Research, as it has proven affective and safe, saving and/or aiding many lives.
On the other hand, I completely despise Embryonic Stem Cell Research, as it has an outstanding rate of failure, is known to cause more issues in the patients, and involves the murder of human embryos that (with proper care) could otherwise live and grow into healthy human beings.

I completely agree with Lauren's posts, November 18th, 19th 2008. I also think that the we should keep studying stem cells any way we can. There is no reason not to use UNDEVELOPED embryos for research. Other than people say thats its bad because they would grow into a baby. Well, the embryos they use were donated, and if not used, they would go to waste. Jacks post,February 9th 2009, does not make any sense. If two wrongs dont make a right, what makes his comment right? They do not take an undeveloped kidney, as he puts it. They take stem cells, not specific parts, and anyway, the embryo would not grow up. Second, if god chooses when they die, then he chose for them to die like that. If god is all controlling, then it's what he wants.

THEY ARE NOT ALIVE. Research It Before You Make An Arguement On This. If The Embryos Are Going To Be Thrown Away In The Trash, Why Not Use It? It Has Challenged And Crossed Sooooooooooo Many Boundaries In Science, Annnd It Can Help Manyy Manyy People. Why Not Take Advantage Of That? Just That Fact That We're Getting The Cells From Embryo's Doesn't Mean It's Unethical. When You Get Cancer, Annnd The Only Way For You To Prolong Your Life is To Use Stem Cells, Would You? I don't know all too much about adult stem cell research, but I do know quite a bit about embryonic stem cells. I realize that parents must give permission for the cells to be used for research and that the cells would "go to waste" otherwise, but exploiting those cells to create new tissues is just playing God, as is cloning. We're treading too far into His territory, and it's not going to end well. I don't currently see anything wrong with adult stem cell research, besides the fact that it's still creating new tissues.

I think that this is pretty cool. I think they should get people that may be dying and have no hope to survive and pay their family to have them as "rats" in these experiments. Thus, the doctors could see what side effect and happening are going on and try to correct them throuh different methods.
But on the other hand, it's like acting God (as a Michael Stober says) and I halfway agree. I think it's wrong to take a life away. If it was a miscarriage, I find that OK. But to take a life away... That's murder. If they do this with miscarriages we could open new doors (although i am not excited with clomed humans. But the humans would have their own brains, Correct?)
This is a testy subject... Perhaps upon futher research we can come closer to a constructive undersranding.

This article lists some awesome things that stem cell research could offer. Is there an alternative to stem cells that would be just as good as using stem cells that don't involve using embryos? Who would supply the embryos to be killed to harvest the stem cells? Stem cells can only be taken from embryos during the first 14 days of life/development which means it is a living human being at that time. I do not agree with that. I believe further research needs to be done on stem cell research.

The helpfulness of stem cell research is obviously undeniable and can help save many lives that have been damaged and need reparations and as for the part where an embryo is used I believe that God does have a will for us all and since he chooses our fates for us the embryos are not doing something in vain they are being use to help those in need which is ultimately everyone's purpose in life.

I think that using stem cells for the purpose of keeping people alive is fine.
Is it unethical to use an undeveloped embryo that was given with the donor's consent? Especially while the embryo must be donated during the first 14 days of development, before it begins to grow any specialized cells? The cell isn't removed from the body and destroyed, it is grown into a specialized part and used to help another life, there is no life that is taken away. Only given.
If it were you, wouldn't you try.

For people who don't think that doing everything possible to save a person's life us ethical, ignorance is bliss.

I think that using stem cells from embryos is not right. Every embryo (fertilized or not) has the potential for human life. The artical says, "Stem cells can be taken from a variety of sources, including an embryo, a patient, a patient’s relative, or an established stem cell line." There are other ways to get stem cells and that is how they should do it.

I think that although it is clear that we need to further our knowledge of using human stem cells to cure diseases, it is worth-while and we should go for it. One benefit of this technology is that "the use of stem cells that are genetically identical to a patient would decrease that person's risk of cell rejection". Also the article said that once a stem cell line is created then the cells will continue to divide and divide and scientists would never run out. This dividing uncontrollably would cause tumors if put into a human or another organism, but I believe as research progresses then we can fix that flaw. After all, we just started this research didn't we? Did we???

Hmm. Well, I think that using adult stem cells is a great idea. I mean, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with that to me. It actually seems like a really good idea. That would be great to be able to take out one cell and put it back in as a whole tissue.
On the other hand there is using embryos. Now I don't even see how there is an argument there; it is so wrong that it doesn't even make sense! Pull an unborn baby out of someone, then use it for experiments! Oh my goodness! What kind of sadistic freak thought this up? Also, why on earth would anyone want to donate their embryos? This kind of stuff just makes me sick. "Let's suck babies out of people and turn them into a piece of muscle!" BAH!!
Now lets consider another topic. When someone dies, do we just grab they're body and transplant pieces of it into people? No. They had the choice of being a donor, and they chose it. Body part donation is a great thing, and it saves many lives, but doing it without consent would obviously be disrespecting the dead. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not believe that babies who died in miscarriages gave consent to become scientific tests. Using embryos that died naturally is still disrespect of the dead, just as much as involuntary body part donation is.

Sounds risky. The idea of using stem cells themselves sounds great, apart from the side effects. The possible "rejection" and often occurring "tumors". What we all need to ask ourselves is, we can regrow a limb, but are we prepared to risk having tumors form in our bodies? What's the point of having a reconstructed limb if you're not going to live long enough to use it? This may be extreme, but just pointing it out. Other than these obvious risks, stem cell usage could be a great contribution to the advance of medicine and science.

I think it it is very interesting that scientists now have the technology to do experiments like this. As for deciding to have stem cell research or not, I remain neutral and unsure. Because, there are many benefits, for example; studying adult stem cells can help scientists understand how tissues develop and what goes wrong when those tissues become diseased. They can also be used to grow human tissues to test the effects of drugs and chemicals. I feel that this will help research for the future, but there is also a downside.
While stem cells remain undifferentiated and continue to divide for long periods of time. When they are transplanted into an organism, many embryonic stem cells can lead to forming tumors. This risk can be no help at all and still lead to death. But in the end, this study might be worth trying.

I think the idea of human stem cells is good because it can save one's life because the cell keeps growing. Once they complete further studies, using stem cells will work great. I think they should use this ONLY if it's 100% safe, and if it could be the difference between life or death.

Stem cell research sounds interesting. And the benefits, in my opinion, would out weigh the risks. With more research, the risks could begin to diminish. It is really beneficial for patients who have cancer and other diseases. But the risks are huge too, like tumors growing or your body rejecting the new cells. Once scientists can understand the cell more, hopefully this can be an important aspect in saving lives. I would vote YES! to stem cell research.

The concept of Stem cell usage and it's wide range of medical applications sounds very good to my ears really. If in fact Stem cell research becomes a success, though the means of achieving this I have no idea but it could be used for many purposes. Say the technology is perfected and it's studied thoroughly, the life span of course would in my mind be extended greatly. Say an organ fails, and seeing how the tech would most likely be advanced enough, a replacement may be implanted into the one needing it. It is risky there is to be experimental usage on humans though, the results could head in any direction, for the better or for the worse. But in general I'd give Stem cell research and it's usage a GO.

Stem cell research is a very controversial subject and should not be taken lightly, but i believe that it is both good and bad in it's own way. It is good because it would save the lives on ,any patients. And i could offer many possibilities in cloning techniques.
On the other hand the cost is tremendous for the research and the morality can be questioned very easily.
I believe it may benefit the world to use this technology in moderation, such as creating certain cells for a dyeing patient. but we should not toy with this technology and try and play god!! he created life and no one but him should be able to give it.
Cloning's cost does not out way the problems and controversy in my point of view.

I am very supportive of human stem cell research. I think it is necessary to create more targeted ways to kill cancer and cure several diseases. I think all ethical concerns should be excluded from the human stem cell studies as long as the embriotic/adult stem cells are donated volunteerily and are used properly(curing instead of creating new exotic lives) I beleve SCNT would gain importance in future because it makes alot of sense to save the life of a grown human who made thru numerous deadly experiences with a tiny stem cell that may not survive when it grows up.

I think the ONLY relevant issue with stem cells is the ethical one having to do with embryos. If you think life begins at conception, then using embryos is murder. If you don't, then there's no issue. I don't, so I do not have any ethical issue with the use of embryos for stem cell research. The other questions raised, having to do with the cost, insurance, being unsure if it will work, patents and funding are issues that have applied to all medical research in the past and will apply to all medical research in the future. These issues are not unique to stem cell research. These are complications inherent in progress, and are NO reason to stop research that has a great liklihood of revolutionizing medicine in a way that could help millions.

I believe that we should continue the stem cell research. I believe this because this can be like a bone marrow transplant, but with the other cancers that can't be supported by a bone marrow transplant. The stem cell transplant is like the bone marrow transplant, because they both have to work with the existing areas and both of them can be rejected by peoples bodies. Also, the doctors have to find both of them in relatives and family members. So if we went ahead and did the bone marrow transplant, then we should go ahead and do the skin cell research.

I think stem cell research is great and should be allowed. There are more pros than cons for it, pros being that they can give scientists a better understanding of body tissue and how cancer cells replace themselves, also helping scientists develop more targeted cancer therapies. Stem cells can also be used to grow and replace human tissue and cells, which can do awesome things for people with diseases, tumors, and other issues. Cons being that the stem cells may divide so much over a long period of time, which could form tumors, and the process has a chance of screwing up and becoming fatal. I think that this new technology is great. These improvements could really turn into something and could save many lives. Despite this I feel neutral on whether the research should be specified on stem cells. True, there are many benefits to stem cells. A better understanding of the properties of stem cells may give scientists more information about how cancer cells replace themselves and help scientists develop more targeted cancer therapies. Stem cells could also be used to grow human tissues to test the effects of drugs and chemicals. Yet stem cells also have its drawbacks. Stem cells remain undifferentiated and continue to divide for long periods of time. When transplanted into an organism, many embryonic stem cells tend to form tumors that could prove fatal. Another problem is the possible rejection of the stem cells. If they do not quickly adapt to their new environment, the body will reject them and the whole process will have been for nothing. There is also the problem of humanitarianism. The article said "Stem cells can be taken from a variety of sources, including an embryo..." It says there are other sources as well, but who likes the idea of would-be children being used for something other than living. I can tell you I'm not exactly thrilled with it.

It would be a very successful treatment for cancer and other diseases that attack your cells. And, if any damage to your body could be easily healed. But, the risks such as growing a tumor or your body rejecting the stem cells are also very dangerous. Not only would it have been a waste of effort, time, and money, it could possibly kill you. And I think having to give away a embryo to obtain embryonic cells is terrible and it shouldn't be done. Stem cell research is a great scientific advance. It could save countless lives and help people who need organ transplants from dying. However, I believe the use of embryos as a way of creating stem cells is not okay. There are many ethical issues with this because to create the stem cell from an embryo requires taking a potential human life. The issue of this method is completely avoidable, the alternative is using adult stem cells instead which would not be taking a human life. iPS cells (adult stem cells changed to act like embryonic stem cells) are also another way of obtaining stem cells that does not require the taking of a human life. So, without the use of embryonic stem cells, stem cell research is still a good thing that could save many lives.

Stem cell reasearch can definately help in testing the effects of drugs as said in the article, but I think that pushing it as far as cloning will be too un-natural, and is too risky even with a great amount of knowledge and technology. Also in the article when they were talking about how stem cells would have to "learn" their function when place in new or different types of cells, I think that either the stem cells will learn their new function quickly, or not be able to learn it, and keep dividing, causing it to be harmful and useless to the organ like cancer cells. I also agree with the fact that stem cells should also be used to further research that can be dangerous to experiment on actual humans. However, the stem cells should not be taken from embryos. Stem cell research seems like a good way to help people with life-threatening illnesses. There appear to be more benefits than disadvantages in stem cell research. The ethical questions that it pose seem important though. But in a way, if stem cells are not researched, isn't that eventually going to kill someone anyway, someone that is already living and breathing instead of a single-celled organism? However, scientists still appear to have much to learn about them though, so maybe one day it will be possible to grow them without harming anything.

I think that the use of stem cells could help medicine because of potential benefits such as, the cells could assist scientist's in understand how tissues develop and what goes wrong when those tissues become diseased. It also has the potential benefit of improving cancer research and helping restore people after chemotherapy by showing scientists how cancer cells replace themselves and that helps scientists develop more targeted cancer therapies.

I believe that the use of stem cell will be another step towards future treatments for uncurable diseases, or illnesses. There are more benefits than disadvantages. However I am against the use of embryo eggs for such research. Embryo eggs are living organisms that could later be developed and become like us. The use of embryo eggs will be the same thing as taking someone's life. Taking someone's life for another's isn't right. In my opinion stem cell research will help us know more about the unknown and will be a great advance for medication.

I believe stem cell research is a great medical advantage to help those one need it and I think more there should be more research on stem cells. However, I only apply that to adult stem cell use. Killing innocent human (and animal) embryos to use for research and cures isn’t right. Yes, the embryonic stem cells may save a life, but in order to save that life, you have to kill someone else’s.

I think its a good idea to do stem cell research, because if you have a disease, like cancer, you can replace cells that are bad. i also like that you can help people who are in need of it by stem cells.
