A pharmacist dispenses medications prescribed to patients by a physician. To be a pharmacist, you must have at least two years of college, preferably in the natural sciences. This is followed by four years at an accredited college of pharmacy, where you earn a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, or Pharm.D. You must also pass a state exam to earn the Pharm.D., and renewal of your license often requires continuing education. Pharmacists must understand how drugs work and also be aware of a patient’s medical history and potential interactions with other drugs. Some pharmacists go on to earn a master’s or doctorate degree to find work at universities and pharmaceutical companies.
